Karababa Castle

The location of the Castle is related to the ancient city Kanithos as traces of buildings and tombs have been found there, on the soil surface. The hill was fortified for the first time during the Roman period, but was definitely not fortified during the Byzantine period, the Venetian period and the first centuries of the Ottoman rule. The fortress that we see today was built by the Turks in 1684, in order to protect Chalkis from the Venetians. It was designed by Venetian Gerolimo Galopo based on European standards.
